Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme
The Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme (NMACP) has been established to certify nutrient management advisers in New Zealand. The aim of the programme is to build and uphold a transparent set of industry standards for nutrient management advisers to meet so they provide nationally consistent advice of the highest quality to farmers. The programme has processes for setting standards and certifying qualified individuals, as well as managing an ongoing certification system.
In 2012, DairyNZ commissioned the Fertiliser Association to establish the programme as part of the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Primary Growth Partnership (PGP).
The programme has an Advisory Group (PDF) with pan sector representation which allows the agricultural industry to speak with one voice regarding the qualifications and ongoing proficiency of those who advise on nutrient use and management in the farming community. A Standard Setting Group sets the standards for training and assessment of nutrient management advisers as well as defining the scope within which advisers should work.
To become certified, nutrient management advisers will have to demonstrate they have appropriate qualifications, or equivalent field experience, with a suitable training record for a range of subject matter prescribed by the Standard Setting Group. Advisers are required to have successfully completed the Massey Intermediate and Advanced courses in Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture, plus demonstrate that their skills and knowledge meet the required standards through a competency assessment.
Once certified, an adviser is listed on the website. Farmers and the public are able to view the list of certified advisers.
Certification is open for all nutrient management advisers who wish to be recognised as meeting the standards set for New Zealand. This includes farm advisers whose scope of work goes beyond nutrient management advice because it is recognised that sound nutrient management advice underpins any plan for farm related operations.
